"Craigslist Scam:

Hi i'm David, i'm interested in your dryer you have on cl, tell me the least you can take for it.

Sorry it's sold
07/22, 9:58 PM

what else do you have for sale?

This is the exact same way a fraudulent transaction started a week ago from a different name and number (Matt Rhoden), starting out the same way (Is the unit still for sale, and if not, then what else do you have for sale?)

Report and block any text messages you receive in response to online ads where they tell you they are going to send you money that includes the payment for the movers.

Here is the full report on what happened to me last week:

Got a message from a Matt Rhoden from phone number (808) 463-5896 last week, who told me he wanted to buy my dryer that was for sale on Craig's List, and would send me a cashier's check for the dryer plus the moving fee, and asked me to pay the movers directly.

A week later, I received a check in the mail in a tracked USPS envelope, for $1400 more than the price of the dryer. And I got a text message from "Matt Rhoden" on phone number (805) 410-5001 saying that he had confirmation that the check was delivered and do I have it. I called the police and gave them the check, the envelope, and a tran of both text messages.

The police said that this is a widespread scam that they have seen before. The way it plays out is that they confirm the sale, and mail a check that is more than the agreed-upon price. Then when they have confirmation that you got the check, they have you deposit it, which will start a 2-day hold by your bank, and in the meantime they ask you to PayPal, Venmo or Western Union a check for the “accidental overage.” They say they are sorry for the trouble, so they tell you to send them $100 less than the accidental difference for your trouble. They get your immediate funds, and then the check bounces after a day or two and you are out the money you sent them.

Advice from the police: Report and block any phone number that text messages you saying they will send you the sale price plus the cost of the movers. And if you get as far as receiving the check, simply respond to the text message by saying that you sold your item to someone else and they should stop payment on the check because it is apparently lost. That will end it for them and you will never hear from them again."
