"I got a call from the same number with a voicemail saying "if you or your attorney don't call back right away, you will be arrested." The person was very angry. He said his name is Jason. I called the number back but it is out of service. These scammers switch phones once enough people catch on to them and call back."

"I just got hit with this one.

It was a guy from "the Department of Legal Affairs of the U.S. Treasury" letting me know that I would be arrested within the hour for tax-related violations.

He left a message on my answering machine first. When I called back (using the caller ID), he answered.

He knew my name and my address, he said that the incident related to my 2012 taxes, and he said that the amount in question (including the taxes and the penalties for the late payment charges) was around $4000 -- so, it wasn't like tens of thousands of dollars, but a believable amount.

He read what he claimed was a letter that listed the charges, then he asked me if I had any questions, and then he responded to all of my questions very calmly and professionally.

It really freaked me out, because he never asked me for anything -- he just wanted to notify me that I was going to be arrested within the hour so that I could get my personal affairs in order.

Wow!

So, I hope that you do not receive a similar call -- but, if you do, you will know it is just a scam.

After confirming that it was a scam, I called the number back and a different person with "the Department of Legal Affairs of the U.S. Treasury" answered. I got his name and verified the spelling of his last name, then I told him that I wanted to return the favor and let him know that the FBI would be arriving within the hour to arrest him (and his co-workers), and then I hung up."

"The same fast, almost indecipherable message - a woman with a strong Indian accent - leaving messages on my cell phone at 6am threatening legal action if I did not call back. I have been getting several such messages lately from different telephone numbers, even though I signed my phone number up to 'do not call'"

"Deep this Indian accent - sounding urgent says " this call is intended for "full name" (can't understand catch) receive call I need you to return this call (something panic something) my name is Allison my division is 1-909-713-7147.

During the message I picked it up asking "what is this regarding" only to discover it was a recording! Really do they expect people to call back a recording?"

If you don't return the call or I don't hear from your attorney either, the only thing I can do is wish you luck as the situation unfolds on you." Woman caller, heavily accented (can't place nationality), loud and angry/threatening, words rushed together. No organization given. I did not phone back."
